Speaker’s Bureau

In addition to counseling, LCEA clinical staff members provide educational services to the general public. Each of us is prepared to present on selective topics related to our areas of professional interest or expertise. We help equip schools, churches, community groups, fraternities, sororities and a variety of other organizations to meet the needs of the people they serve.

Below is a list of topics and speakers. If your group is interested in a presentation on any of these subjects, or on a topic that is not listed here, please contact us at 488-8060 to obtain more information or to schedule a speaker. We look forward to serving you in this way.

Women’s Issues

WOMEN’S HEALTH: A BALANCED APPROACH  (Reiners)
Focused on general wellness, this presentation includes sections on how women can achieve and sustain optimal well being spiritually, emotionally, mentally, socially and physically.

ANGER: THE WOMAN’S FORBIDDEN EMOTION  (Sukraw)
A Christ-centered overview of anger’s many disguises, its companion emotions, and how to take the first step toward hope and healing.

RELEASE FROM A PERFORMANCE DRIVEN LIFESTYLE (Sukraw)
Confront the false hope that accompanies a woman’s performance-driven life, and learn how to replace this endless cycle of defeat with the grace and hope that can only be found in Christ.

Emotional Issues

UNDERSTANDING AND GETTING HELP FOR DEPRESSION  (Brooks, Larson or Stringham)
Depression occurs frequently in our society yet is often misunderstood. Learn how depression differs from ordinary sadness or grief, the factors that contribute to its development, and what can be done to aid recovery for yourself or others. The appropriate use of medications is addressed although particular attention is given to non-medication treatment approaches.

LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE STRESS  (Brooks)
Stress can motivate us or can keep us in a state of emotional and physical exhaustion. Understand the different types of stress in your life. Learn how to create and implement a plan to rid your life of some negative stressors and begin managing the rest.

OVERCOMING THE TRAP OF BEING TOO BUSY  (Larson)
“Overbusyness” may be one of the most serious problems affecting families today. Learn why this can be such a problem and what can be done to keep a healthy balance in our lives.

ANGER! YOUR ALLY OR YOUR ENEMY?  (Stringham)
Anger is one of the most powerful yet disturbing emotions. It can disrupt thinking and provoke dark impulses, but it can also motivate extraordinary and noble actions. The seminar will present the basic facts about anger and how it affects people physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. The program will also include information that will help participants improve anger control and learn how to channel this emotion toward positive outcomes in their lives.

Marriage

A NEW LOOK AT ROMANCE  (Larson)
Do the movies get it right when they portray romance? Is romance primarily a female concern? Is it more than flowers and love letters? Learn how romance, when properly understood and demonstrated, can help energize any marriage.

BUILDING A FRIENDSHIP FOUNDATION IN YOUR MARRIAGE  (Larson)
The longest and most stable marriages are those based on the foundation of friendship. But so often the “best friend” that we thought we married is not the relationship that we experience now. If you want your marriage to be satisfying over the long-term, deepen the friendship you have with your mate.

HARMONY IN THE MIDST OF MARITAL DIFFERENCES  (Larson)
Ever notice how some of those same differences that initially attracted us to our mates can become those things that drive us up the wall? Differences are not deficits! Learn how to accept and appreciate each other despite the differences that exist within the marriage.

VERBAL ABUSE  (Brooks or Stringham)
Physical abuse leaves physical scars that eventually heal. Verbal abuse leaves emotional scars and on-going struggles with confusion, self blame, and feelings of inadequacy. Learn how to define verbal abuse, understand its dynamics, and find out what you can do to stop it. You can also discover ways to help a friend who is caught up in this pattern.

Children and Parenting

PARENTING: THE EARLY YEARS  (Reiners)
What are the basic needs of children? What are the most common triggers for emotional and behavioral problems? This presentation will help attendees improve their care of young children and learn how to contribute to youngsters’ emotional wellness.

ADHD (ATTENTION-DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER)  (Reiners)
How is ADHD diagnosed? What distinguishes ADHD from normal childhood impulsivity and restlessness? Designed for parents and teachers, this program helps participants understand the symptoms, associated disorders, and proper management of this condition in children.

Other Issues

UNDERSTANDING AND RESPONDING TO HOMOSEXUALITY  (Stringham)
The rise of gay culture has been accompanied by a number of myths that present enormous and bewildering challenges for many people. By becoming acquainted with what is actually known about homosexuality, participants will gain answers to their own questions and become equipped to share important information with others. In addition, this seminar will help attendees develop greater compassion so they can build bridges of understanding with members of the gay community, their families, and their friends.

BEING A HELPFUL FRIEND  (Larson)
Most of us want to be supportive when our friends go through difficult times but often we don’t know how to do so. Discover how to be helpful to those in need, how to become a better listener, and how to avoid unhelpful responses.

MANAGING A CHRONIC DISEASE  (Brooks)
Chronic diseases usually cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear. As a result, people have the choice of either managing their symptoms or being managed by them. Learn how to partner with your doctor to limit the effects of illness, develop an attitude of empowerment and live life to the fullest.
